Mawphlang
25 km from Shillong, Mawphlang is famed for its sacred forests, preserved by the local people since ancient times. The Mawphlang Sacred Forest has an amazing life form of plants, flowering trees, orchids and butterflies. The sacred-groves are in sharp contrast to their surrounding grasslands. They are generally rimmed by a dense growth of Castanopsis kurzii trees, forming a protective hedge which halts intrusion of Pinus kasia (Khasi pine) which dominates all areas outside the sacred groves. Inside the outer rim, the sacred groves are virtually Nature's Own Museum. The heavily covered grounds have a thick cushion of humus accumulated over the centuries. The trees in every sacred grove are heavily loaded with epiphytic growth of aroids, pipers, ferns, fern-allies and orchids. The humus-covered grounds likewise harbour myriad varieties of plant life, many of which are found nowhere else.
Mawsynram
Mawsynram is a small village 56 kilometres from Shillong. Visit the Mawjymbuin Cave consisting of exquisite stalagmites shaped into a massive Shivalinga. The cave also has a dome shaped rock with a flat top called the Symper Rock. |

Mawthadraishan
Mawthadraishan peak (70 km) is located on the northern side of Nongstoin - Shillong road, near Nongshillong, Mawroh and Markasa villages. On top of the range, there is a depression with about 7 to 8 fish ponds of considerable size. The apex of the peak offers a panoramic view of the plains of Assam, and the distant Himalayas. The districts of Garo Hills, Khasi Hills and part of Bangladesh come within the Panoramic horizons of Mawthadraishan peak.
Nongkhnum Island
Nongkhnum Island (14 Kms from Nongstoin) is the biggest river island in Meghalaya and the second biggest river island in Asia, after Majuli Island in Assam. Travelling on foot from Nongstoin trek for two and a half-hours to reach the Island. The Kynshi River bifurcates into the Phanliang River and the Namliang River to form the island. The Phanliang River forms a beautiful lake adjacent to the sandy beach and finally forms a 60 meter fall -Shadthum Fall. Within the Island, there are big trees and areas of grassland and natural playground. There are plenty of fishing pools, especially near the sandy shore, called Wei-Phanliang. |

Drive to Umlawn Cave (70 km) located in the Lumshnong village. It is the longest and also the deepest cave in the sub-continent and is interconnected with two other caves namely Kot-Sati and Umskor caves. The total length of these caves is more than 21 kms and about 100 m in depth. Later visit the Shrine of the lady of good health located in Raliang village. It is a magnificent triple storied octagonal structure consisting of only one big hall with the altar on the centre. The imposing statue of our Lady of good Health is made of shimmering white marble standing upon a globe. Return to Jowai (32 km). Overnight in Jowai.

Drive to Dawki; the International trade route border town. Enroute visit Thlu Muwi (16 km from Jowai on the Jowai Muktapur road to Dawki). See the stone bridge built during the rule of the Jaintia King consisting of huge well hewn granite stone slabs perched on equally similar pillars. Beside the stone bridge is also the Muwi Waterfalls. On approaching Dawki is the Umngot river, the venue of the annual boat race held during March - April at Umsyiem. This is the gateway to Bangladesh where major export and import transactions take place. Drive to Mawlynong & O/N.

DAY 5
Morning trek down a 3 km trail (to the valley south of the Resort) through second growth, bamboo groves and grounds with Areca palms. As you trek these routes, watch birds which include some rare species. Overnight in Laitkynsew – Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort.
DAY 6
Today you will trek to Ummunoi to see the Living Root Bridge. 4 hour trek covers 4 km down and
up 1000 feet approx. Trek downhill through Sohsarat village followed by a jungle path leading to the Living Root Bridge. Spend time at the Living Root Bridge & get down into the stream and take a refreshing bath in the stream. En-route witness snails, millipedes, butterflies and spiders. Return to the resort. Overnight in Cherrapunjee.
DAY 7
Today you will trek 25 km to Double Decker Bridge & Natural Swimming Pools. The day long trek involves 7 hours walking and a total duration of 9 hours & covers downhill 2500 feet and up. The trek route crosses a beautiful mountain enabling an exclusive view of the valley and passes through three interesting Khasi villages. This route can be covered even by vehicle. En route the Double Decker Bridge, you will come across Living Root Bridges and Steel Rope bridges. Beyond the Double Decker Root Bridge walk on level ground for 2 km / 20 minutes to reach Mawsaw Steel Rope Bridge. Access the natural swimming pools when the flow is normal. Return to Resort after lunch. Overnight in Cherrapunjee.
DAY 8
Today trek 14 km to the Warm Swimming Pool and Angling Spot. The 10 hours trek is a walk to the river bed at the western end of Laitkynsew hill. After walking to Nongwar village by road this trail takes off downhill by steep stone stairway. Latter part proceeds along the top of a spur till it reaches the steep banks of the river. It takes about 2 hours to reach the river bed. There are nice angling spots around here. One can venture walk upstream. In winter the river flows along one side of the river. On the other side you get stagnated pools of water left behind as the water level receded. These pools get warmed faster by the winter sun and the water is warmer to swim here than in the flowing water. Start back on to the trail by afternoon to reach the top before it is dark. Overnight in Cherrapunjee.
DAY 9
Today trek 20 km through Village Siej to Ladumrin. The 7 hours trek goes downhill through village Sohsarat, Village Siej, through betelnut and betel leaf gardens and tropical rainforests to reach Ladumrin. One reaches the limestone mining areas of Mawlong and has to follow the road back to the Resort on foot or vehicle a distance of about 15 km. It is an interesting walk through War Khasi villages. Overnight in Cherrapunjee.
DAY 10

Today you will trek 6 km to Mawsiekhriah / Khlieh Mawlong. The two hour trek involves light trek on the top of the hill almost on level ground passing through the forests of Laitkynsew, a vast natural rock garden and a steep rock cliff face dropping off a few hundreds of feet overlooking Mawlong village, the limestone mines of Ichhamati & a few mountain streams. The Sylhet plains of Bangladesh spreads across the south from the foot of the hills. Return to Resort. Evening free. Overnight in Cherrapunjee.
DAY 7
Morning Trek 8 km to Mawshamok. The two hours trek involves trekking along a beautiful valley with fascinating formations of clouds sweeping through the pass between Mawshamok and Laitkynsew hills & waterfalls. Rain walk during monsoons make the trek unique. Return to resort. Later take a Short Village 8 km walk through Laitkynsew and Nongwar villages. The two hours trek involves walking to the villages located on the ridge tops of Laitkynsew hill. They are ancient villages and command a beautiful view of the valley between Laitkynsew hill and Mawsynram hill on one side and the Sylhet plains of Bangladesh on the other. Witness over two dozen waterfalls including Nohkalikai, Daiñthlen and Laipateng Khohsiew. At the end of the road at Nongwar you see the Ramakhrishna Mission school established in 1928.
